Although, female Chinese writers are not as common as males, there are many examples. This is because the social expectations placed upon them overtime by society were different. The social expectations changed between times of war and times of peace, which allowed female authors to rise and fall during the various time periods of peace and war.

Conclusions from China and Beyond
Although female Chinese writers are not as common as males, there are many female authors throughout Chinese history. In fact, as time went on in Ancient China, female authors became more and more common and begin writing more than just poetry. This included songs, journals, plays, novels, and autobiographies.
One particular aspect that contributed to the rise of the female author was the times of war that occurred in China between the periods of peace. Females were more likely to write during these eras as they had the ability and were expected to fill in and entertain themselves while the men were away at war. After the war ended, there would be more and more women who had gained skills and worked to retain them. This allowed for the number of female authors to exponentially increase overtime.
Another aspect that affected the rise of the female author in China was societal expectations. In fact, although this study was completed strictly using data from China, this variable is related to the push for women writers across the globe.
Women were allowed more freedoms and many went on to get their education as our world has gotten older. Many countries today are pushing for more freedoms and equality for women. This has increased the number of females in a variety of positions (including authorship) across both developed and developing countries.
